This month, we're delighted to feature Alison Melson, who teaches seventh and eighth grade GT ILA at Griffin Middle School.
(If you're a teacher and would like to connect with our gifted community, or if you know of a teacher who has a great message and story, please contact us. We'd love to feature more of our wonderful teachers here!)
My name is Alison Melson and I teach seventh and eighth grade GT ILA at Griffin Middle School. I have been teaching gifted and talented students for seven years. I have a degree in history with a minor in political science from the University of Arizona.
Every year I love my job more than the year before. My room is full every morning and after school with GT students who just want to “hang out" with me and be in “their classroom.” This makes my heart full. Students feel they can be their true selves in my GT class. The discussions and relationships I have with these students are my favorite part of my job.
At the end of the year I want my students to be able to advocate for their learning styles and their social and emotional needs. If this happens when they move on to high school then I feel that I have done my job as a GT teacher.
Alison Melson is a 7th and 8th grade GT ILA teacher at Griffin Middle School.
